This past July, during the Tour De France, the owner of team Tinkoff Saxo, Oleg Tinkov, announced that he will be selling the team and leaving the cycling world. One of the biggest names in cycling, leaving? An interviewer from Cycling News gives us some of his reasons.
Oleg Tinkov has been a major sponsor of Team Tinkoff Saxo for the past 5 years. He states that the company is managed by, “stupid people.” He has,“tried to change the business model of professional cycling and just decided it was time to call it quits.” In Cycling News’ article, he states, if “I were to do it again, I would spend the 60 million euros all over again, just so that I could ride with some of the best in business, such as Alberto Contador, and 2 time cycling world champion, Peter Sagan.” One of the biggest issues with Tinkov pulling the plug is that some of the riders don’t have a contract ready for the next season. Unlike Alberto Contador (who is now signed with Team Trek Segafredo), and Peter Sagan, it is really hard to be picked up by a team if you are not well known. For some, unfortunately, this could be the end of their cycling careers.
